What is Homeowners insurance?
Homeowners insurance provides financial protection against disasters. A standard policy insures the home itself and the things you keep in it.

Homeowners insurance is a package policy. This means that it covers both damage to your property and your liability or legal responsibility for any injuries and property damage you or members of your family cause to other people. This includes damage caused by household pets.

Damage caused by most disasters is covered but there are exceptions. The most significant are damage caused by floods and poor maintenance.  Maintenance-related "wear and tear" problems are the homeowners' responsibility.

Why do you need homeowners insurance?
Your home is likely to be your biggest investment and most important asset.  Protecting your home if something unexpected happens just makes good sense.

  • If your home was destroyed by fire or damaged by a natural disaster, you'd need money to repair or replace it
  • If a guest in your home is injured, liability protection and medical coverage help pay expenses
  • If you are a victim of theft and vandalism, it can reimburse you for your loss or pay for repairs
  • If you are still paying for your home, your lender will require insurance

It is important to know that homeowners insurance is meant to cover unexpected damage, not routine maintenance. Ask your agent to talk about what is covered and be sure to read your policy so you know exactly what's included and what is not.

Condominium Insurance

If you own a condominium, your condo association probably has a master policy that insures all the property and common areas that are collectively owned by the unit owners. These policies usually cover the actual structure of your home, so you don't need to purchase this coverage separately.

However, a condo association policy doesn't cover the interior of your unit, your personal property, or your legal responsibility (liability). Our condominium policies are designed to protect your prized possessions, protect you against any personal liability, and provide assistance should your home become damaged or unlivable.

Additional coverage is available for property such as personal computer equipment, business property, jewelry, bicycles, cameras, etc.

Included Protections

  • Your personal property up to the limits you choose to purchase.
  • Coverage for loss of use (reimbursing you for expenses for loss of use of your home caused by named perils up to 40%* of your personal property limit with no time limit).
  • Medical expenses (paying up to $1,000* per person, per incident, if someone is injured on your property).
  • Liability exposures (protecting you against certain risks up to $500,000* per accident for bodily injury or property damage).
  • Expense of loss assessment by the association against the unit-owners, up to $1,500*.
  • Protection from damages resulting from bursting/leaking plumbing or water heater, vandalism, and other causes.

        * Coverage Limits vary by carrier along with options to increase coverage amounts.

Tenants & Condos Insurance
Condos and Tenants Insurance can provide a competitively priced solution for owner-occupied condos, hard-to-place rental or secondary/seasonal condos, and units rented by tenants.

Coverage can be packaged with Excess Flood, Personal Umbrella Liability/Excess Personal Liability, and/or a Personal Articles Floater to provide vital additional coverage at a discounted rate.

Things to consider and questions to ask your agent
Here are few things to discuss with your agent that will influence your decisions.

  • How much will it cost to rebuild my house and replace my belongings if they are damaged or destroyed? (Ask your agent to talk you through your home's features and the things you own so you can make an informed decision about coverage.)
  • Does the insurance company have a good reputation for customer service? Is it known for paying claims fairly and promptly?
  • What discounts are available? (Ask about multiple policy, security system and fire resistance discounts.)
  • What's the process for filing and settling a claim? (Ask who to call and what happens after you file a claim.)
